Alfred Melvin Aune was born on September 28, 1918 in Alden Township, WI to Isaac and Lena (Gjernes) Aune. He grew up in Amery, WI and attended Little Falls grade school. He was inducted into Service on August 26, 1941 and released on September 6, 1945. In April of 1942 he worked on the Alcan Highway from White Horse to the Alaskan border, and in January of 1943 he very proudly served in the Aleutian Islands building air strips at Adak. In May of 1943 Alfred served in the battle of Attu, which the Japanese had taken over and he received a Bronze Star. From there he went on to Shimya to build the air field which Japan could be bombed from, and he returned home to the States in December of 1944. He was a proud World War II vet, serving with the 18th US Army engineers (Combat). In January of 1946, Al began work as a mechanic at JG Larson & Sons International Harvester in Hammond, WI. He was united in marriage to Minnie Duckert in October of 1947 and in 1955 he started his own shop. The couple moved to the Hayward, WI area in July of 1975 and to Amery in 2001. When he was 80 he signed up for a computer class in Winter, WI and was the oldest "kid" in the class. Minnie passed away on October 29, 2008 and is buried at the Vet's Cemetery in Spooner, WI. Al loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a gun smith and life member of the NRA and enjoyed shooting his rifle and gun. He was very handy and could fix anything from a sewing machine to tractors. His sense of humor will be greatly missed. Al was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Lenora Bottolfson, and brother in laws, Elroy Waalen and Harry Bottolfson. He is survived by his sister, Edna Waalen and many nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 from the Williamson-White Funeral Home Chapel in Amery with Pastor Margaret Grant officiating. A visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 am prior to the service at the funeral home.
