Angeline (Angie) H. Carlson, age 67, of Amery, WI, passed away quietly on Oct. 30, 2013 at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN.
Angie was born Aug. 18, 1946 in Weilburg, Germany to Marvin and Toni (Kiefer) Johnson during the U.S. occupation after WWII. She was reunited with her father in December, 1947. Angie was soon joined by four siblings, Johnny, Howie, Becky, and Heidi.
While in high school, Angie was a "good kid". She was active in athletics, choral singing, and spent many hours taking care of her brothers and sisters while her mother and father worked to make ends meet. The highlight of high school was when she was named the Amery Fall Festival queen in 1964. After leaving high school, she worked at Fabri-Tek and Wayne's Café until late 1966, before moving to St. Paul to work towards her dream of being a nurse. Angie was working at Montgomery Ward as a catalog sales clerk for only three months when the St. Paul Winter Carnival came calling. She never gave herself much of a chance to win, not having been in college, and coming from a small town, but to everyone's surprise and excitement, she was crowned Queen of the Snows in 1967. After a whirlwind year making 300 appearances, including the Indy 500, the Tournament of Roses Parade, the Memphis Cotton Carnival (where she met her idol, Elvis), and many charitable events, she relinquished her crown and returned to Amery.
Angie married Jon Carlson in 1968 in Hudson, WI. She had two boys, David, born in Hudson, WI, and Robert, born in Escanaba, MI. After living away from Amery for several years, Angie divorced Jon and moved home to Amery. Her family was a great support system for her when she returned and they often helped out with the boys while she worked jobs to support her sons. She loved watching her sons play hockey, and was treasurer of the Amery Hockey Association for many years. She worked at the Dairy Queen in Amery for 20+ years, the girls that worked there still talk about how much they loved Angie. She spent the last several years working at Willow Ridge where she loved, and was loved by the residents and coworkers.
Angie loved being a Grandma. She will greatly miss her five grandchildren, Riley, Emma, Layne, Ellie, and Dane, and they will miss her sense of humor, and the supply of candy she kept for them. She leaves behind her sons, David and wife Jackie (Charland) Carlson, and Bob Carlson and Kristine Haugen. She also will be missed by her brothers and sisters and their families, Johnny and Jo Johnson, Howie and Julie Johnson, Arnie and Heidi Stoeberl, Keith and Becky Martell. She was taken from all of us too quickly, but we were all blessed to have the time we had with her. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at the Williamson-White Funeral Home in Amery. A visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at the funeral home as well as for the hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
