Bruce L. Johnson, 74, of Star Prairie, WI, formerly of Cambridge, MN, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, February 22, 2016 at Willow Ridge Nursing Home in Amery, WI, where he'd been a resident for 18 months. Cause of death was congestive heart failure.

Bruce was born November 13, 1941 in Minneapolis, MN to Donald and Jeanne Johnson of Cambridge. Growing up, he attended First Baptist Church and was an active member of the local Boy Scouts organization. He was awarded the Scouts' highest honor of Eagle Scout and attended the World Boy Scout Jamboree in England in 1957.

A natural athlete in his youth, Bruce excelled in many sports in high school. Following graduation in 1959, he went on to become co-captain of the highly successful University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldog team and proud member of the "Old Guard." In January 1963, Bruce signed a contract to play football for the Minnesota Vikings. While his NFL career didn't last long, this remained a highlight of his athletic achievements.

Bruce went on to graduate from the University of Minnesota School of Law. He practiced corporate real estate law at Minnesota Mutual in St. Paul until his retirement some years ago.

All through life, Bruce was a passionate outdoorsman. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and also enjoyed skiing. He will be remembered for his gregarious nature, wit, and love of storytelling.

He is survived by his brother Neil of Cambridge, MN; children Derek of Aspen, CO; Grant of Danville, CA; and Libby of Aspen, CO. Step-children Jeff Kammerer of Denver, CO; Tera Snyder of Burnsville, MN; Rob Kammerer of St. Paul, MN; and Tina Vogel of Hudson, WI, as well as six grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.

Bruce's wishes were to be cremated. A celebration of life will take place sometime this spring, with exact date, time and location to be determined.
