Obituary

Carl Richard Schaefer was born on July 10, 1926 to parents William A. and Edna N. (nee Weber) Schaefer. Carl was the only child born to this union. He lived, grew up and was schooled in Newport, KY. World War II interrupted his high school education as he was drafted prior to completing his high school education. Following the war he returned to the classroom and completed his high school and earned his high school diploma.
Following High School, he began his employment with the Cincinnati and Suburban Bell Telephone Company, for whom he worked for more than 44 years as a phone installer, and line and equipment repairman.
It was at a church camp, Camp Sunshine, that he met and married the love of his life, Janet Sophia Howard. These two courted for two years and were married on October 4, 1952 in North College Hill Ohio. They lived and raised their family in this community. They were able to celebrate their Fifty Year Wedding Anniversary in October of 2002 at the church from which they were married. To this union two sons were born, The Rev. Barry R. Schaefer (Joyce) of Amery WI, and David W. Schaefer (Kimberly Bond-Schaefer) of Concord MA.
Carl was faithful to the Lord Jesus Christ his whole life. He confessed his faith as a Methodist in Kentucky, then later joined the St. Paul church faith community in Ohio. Carl and Janet were life-long members of the St. Paul Evangelical and Reformed Church, and later of the St. Paul United Church of Christ, in North College Hill Ohio. During his years there Carl had served on many and various committees, was an usher, greeter and had served at one time as the Building Fund Treasurer during a major construction project of a whole new church complex. Formerly this congregation owned and renovated an old movie theater, where they worshipped until the new complex was completed. You can see evidence of this renovated theater in his wedding photos. He remained active in his church in many and informal capacities being one of the congregation's "welcomers", seeking out and talking with all "new faces" that graced their doors.
Carl moved to Amery WI, to be closer to a portion of his family in 2008 following the death of his wife Janet in 2007. He maintained his own apartment on Lake Street in Amery. He was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Amery, was a regular member of the Polk County WI Senior Dining group that meets and dines at the church. He lived independently until recently when he moved to the River Bend Assisted Living facility, and later to the Willow Ridge Nursing home, where he resided until his death on December 28, 2013 bringing the span of his life to 87 years.
During his life he was a Boy Scout leader, a member of the Telephone Pioneers, (a telephone employee retiree organization), and a member of the American Red Cross Volunteer Disaster relief group, serving meals to Fire/EMS/Police and many victims of disasters.
Preceding him in death were his wife Janet, and his parents.
Surviving his death are his sons, Barry (Joyce), David (Kim), granddaughters Kelly (Jon) Stansbury of Las Vegas NV; Erin (Aaron) Stewart of Casper WY; Kate Schaefer of Kissimmee, FL; and Erika Schaefer of Concord MA; great grandchildren, Sophia Stewart, Liam Stansbury, step-great grandson Preston Stansbury of Cheyenne, WY; other relatives and countless friends .

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. from the Congregational Church in Amery. There will be a time of visitation for the hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Arlington Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Mount Healthy, Ohio.
