Donald R. Nygaard, age 81 of Woodbury, MN and Amery, WI passed away on October 19, 2010 at the Willow Ridge Health Care Center in Amery. Don and his wife Gretchen came to Amery in 1990 as 'seasonal residents' when they purchased a small cottage. But soon, his love of the beautiful and scenic Apple River flowage with his 'million dollar view' beckoned him to call Amery "home". Some of his favorite pastimes were hosting parties for his "friends on the Bend"; his wonderful neighbors, Paul Grasser, Bill and Randa Pierce, Dick and Bobbie Griffith, Tom and Connie Ducklow, and others; enjoying a 'dirty' martini and dinner at the Shoreview on Thursday nights, taking drives on the rustic roads and photographing the river's ever-changing beauty and serenity. Don was a man of many talents and accomplishments and recipient of many Twin City and international awards and recognitions. He was a honored host dad to over 100 international students and professionals from around the world, and was a former Rotarian of Mpls., St. Paul and Woodbury clubs and instrumental in the formation of the Amery Rotary club. Don was a Paul Harris Fellow, ORIF member, and also served as Assistant District Governor Rotary #5960. Don is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Gretchen Dian; loving children, Donald L. (Linda), Tom, Chris, and Barbara of Mpls.; Isa Toledo of Woodbury, and granddaughters; and many other treasured family members and friends. A celebration of a wonderful life will be held on Wednesday, October 27, 4 to 7 pm., Oak Marsh Golf Club, I-94 and Co. Rd. 13, Oakdale, MN; with a prayer and memory service at 6 pm. Memorials in lieu of flowers are preferred. "Don't get around much anymore!"
