Doris Marie (Strehlo) Meyer
Age 77, of Amery Wisconsin, died Thursday October 20, 2011. Doris was born June 12, 1934 on a farm near Wilson, WI; one of 12 children of Walter and Opal Strehlo. She grew up in rural Wisconsin. Doris graduated as an RN from the nursing program at St. Mary's College, Minneapolis MN in 1956 and later graduated from the University of MN with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. She worked as a school nurse for many years both in the Inver Grove Heights and St. Paul schools. She retired from nursing in 1994.
On August 27, 1958 Doris married, Joseph A. Meyer in Spring Valley, Wisconsin. Together they had six children. Doris loved and supported her children in all that they did. She was a strong supporter of the arts and music, the environment, and helping those in need. She regularly donated to the local food shelves, provided clothes, and sewed blankets for the homeless. She had a generous and giving heart.
Doris is survived by her husband Joe Meyer who was truly the love of her life, her six children: Mary Jacobson (Dennis), Ann Meyer, Joseph (Tony) Meyer, Mark Meyer (Lynda), Julia Apaloo, and Cathy Heine (Tim). Twelve grandchildren: Geoff Jacobson, Derek Jacobson (Clara Hall), Elise Jacobson, Joseph Bradley (Laura Peel), Robert Meyer, Rachel Meyer, Alex Meyer, Nathan Meyer, Douglas Meyer, Mikalyn Heine, Taylor Brock, and Brittney Brock. Three great-grandchildren: Marshall Bradley, Xavier Bradley, and Cassidy Jacobson.
Doris will be missed by a loving community of family and friends that remain grateful for the impact she had on their lives. A memorial service to honor her life is planned at her home in Amery Wisconsin on June 12, 2012.
Her family welcomes donations in her name to the Amery Wisconsin Public Library, the Amery Public Radio WPAC, and the Amery Wisconsin Food Shelf.
