D. Gulaine Elwood (nee Berhow) was born in Buffalo Center, Iowa on December 7, 1925 to Floyd and Jesse Berhow. The eldest of six children, Gulaine spent her lifetime taking care of others. As a young girl she lived with her family in Iowa, Oregon, and Montana before returning to Buffalo Center. She obtained her teacher's certificate after completion of high school and began teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in Iowa. At this time she met the love of her life, Gerald Elwood. She and Gerald were married on February 11, 1944 just 3 weeks before his deployment to the South Pacific during World War II. Upon his return they started their family and in May of 1950 moved to the farm outside of Amery, Wisconsin where they continued to build their family. Throughout the years they raised turkeys, chickens, pigs, and dairy cows as well as many crops. It was a busy life for this family with eight children.
Gulaine found time to help all of her children through school, 4-H, sports, music lessons, and preparing them to lead independent lives. Gardening, canning, sewing, reading, quilting, crocheting, and serving with her United Methodist Ladies Aid were all important activities for her. In her "spare" time, she and Gerald enjoyed square dancing and round dancing with close friends and in later years had the opportunity to travel to different locations throughout the country. It was her love of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that brought her true joy in life. Her lap always had extra room for one more child and there was never a shortage of kringla cookies for anyone who stopped by. Gulaine died peacefully at Willow Ridge Healthcare in the early morning hours of Thursday, May 14, 2015 surrounded by her family.
Gulaine is preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; parents, Floyd and Jesse Berhow; sister, Lovella Verba; brother, Ron Berhow; and grandson Nicholas Elwood. She is survived by her children: Karlene (Al) Mayotte of Austin, MN, Barb (Perry) Goetsch of Oconomowoc, Greg (Deb) Elwood of Hudson, Debbie (Gene) McLain of Grantsburg, Ross (Lori) Elwood of Cambridge, MN, Barry (Traci) Elwood, Brent (Dawn) Elwood, and Pamela (Tom) Hartmann all of Amery. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Also left to mourn are her brothers: Gene (Myrtle) Berhow, Marvin (Mavis) Berhow, and Larry (Karen) Berhow as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends. Her loving spirit and gentle touch will be missed by many.
