Earl Arnold Gorres, age 87 of Amery, Wisconsin passed away at the Amery Hospital and Clinic on Wednesday, November 19, 2014. He was born on June 25, 1927, 2 ½ miles NE of Amery to Arnold and Elva Mae (Erickson) Gorres. He was baptized in 1935 in Beaver Brook, near the East Lincoln Church. He started first grade at the age of five at the Oakview School on county highway F, halfway between Amery and Clear Lake, and attended Oakview for eight years. Earl started high school in Amery in 1940 and graduated from Amery High School in 1944 at 16 years of age. He excelled in football, basketball and track. He was offered college scholarships in Minnesota and Wisconsin, but turned them down to work on the family farm with his dad for several years. On June 1, 1946 Earl was united in marriage to Hope Lien. Over the next 20 years, the couple had six sons, Lynn, Larry, Lee, Michael, Tim and Glen. Their son Lynn passed away at 21 years of age. In 1950 Earl became a sub rural carrier in Amery and continued this for 16 years as a sub and acting carrier. Earl bought out his dad in 1952, and from 1955-1960 he farmed and hauled mail and worked for the Amery phone company. Earl served on the Amery Golf Club Board for several years and as President for five years. He served two terms on the Diaconate of the Congregational Church and two terms as Trustee. In 1966 he went to work as District Sales Manager for the Wisconsin Seed Co., which after three years became Funk Seeds Int. Earl did very well at this job and attained top sales Nationwide for several years. Earl and Hope were able to do a lot of traveling to National meetings and to top sales rep. meetings. In 1973 Earl built a new home across the road from his farm, and sold the farm to Mike in 1977. He retired in 1986 and spent a lot of time golfing, helping on the farm and doing some selling for Mike. From 1995 to 2007 Earl and Hope enjoyed spending their winters in Texas. Earl enjoyed pitching for his fast pitch softball team and played for 24 years, and drove many miles over the years attending his children's and grandchildren's athletic events, including attending the State Wrestling Tournament 16 years in a row. Earl was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Hope; son, Lynn and sister Barb. He is survived by his sons, Larry (Jane), Lee (Beverly), Michael (Cathy), Tim (Paula) and Glen (Kim), as well as 15 grandchildren, Michelle Wieland, Ben Gorres, Greg Gorres, Justin Gorres, Beau Gorres, Garrett Gorres, Dylan Gorres, Naomi Werle, Samantha Mortensen, Anna Ellefson, Luke Gorres, Claire Brandenburg, Nicholas Gorres, Chase Gorres and Mitchell Gorres; two step grandchildren, Sherry Hollister and Doug Mueller; 18 great grandchildren, 3 step great grandchildren; brother, Byron (Genie) Gorres; special friend, Thelma Betzold and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 from the Congregational Church in Amery. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, November 24, 2014 at the Williamson-White Funeral Home in Amery, as well as the hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the Amery Cemetery.
