Gladys Roberta Austin was born on July 7, 1924 in Nashua, Minnesota the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Hughes. Following graduation from high school she attended business school to get her training as an accountant. During World War Two, like many others, she worked at the arsenal. She also spent some time working at hospitals in Superior and Menomonie, Wisconsin. She eventually had a job as an accountant with the State of Minnesota. She was united in marriage to Robert Laurel Austin Sr. in 1946, and to this union four children were born. Following the death of her husband Gladys moved to Amery where she was closer to her daughter. With the help of her family she was able to remain at home where she died peacefully on Tuesday morning March 9, 2010 at the age of 85 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert Austin Sr. and one daughter Dianne Gehrke. Left to mourn are her daughter: Frances Hoff of Amery; sons: Bob (Sandi) Austin of Coolidge, AZ and Ron (Michelle) Austin of Mount Pleasant, SC. She also leaves 13 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren as well as other relatives and friends.
