Herbert F. Sorensen was born on October 18, 1920 to Miles C. Sorensen and Bergliot (Voss) Sorensen, the third of three children, near Osceola, WI. He liked to say he was "born in a barn, but not in a manger". Herb spent his younger years on farms in the Osceola, Grantsburg and East Lincoln areas. In his mid-teens he worked on farms and eventually ended up in Milwaukee with his mother, where he worked as a chauffeur, and then at Cutler and Hammer where he met Katherine Dowhy at a Union meeting. They were married on January 24, 1942. He enlisted in the military and left for basic training in early January 1943. Shortly after he left for duty, his first son, Bruce, was born. He served in the 1128th Military Police in the South Pacific during WWII. He was very proud to be one of 300 handpicked men. His military service was important to him and affected his whole life. When he returned from the war he apprenticed to learn the brick laying trade in Milwaukee. In 1950 he and his growing family moved to rural Amery where he spent the rest of his life. He worked for George W. Olson Construction Company based in Stillwater, MN as their lead foreman. He could take you to the all the towns within a 75 mile radius and show you the churches, schools, hospitals, nursing homes and factories that they built, including the Amery Hospital, Golden Age Manor and part of the old Amery High School. He was very proud of his work. He and Katherine had seven children together. Herb loved his family and truly enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He liked to tell stories and embellishment made the stories "more interesting". He enjoyed fishing, coached 4-H softball, enjoyed animals and loved music. Working hard and being physically strong were things he valued. After Katherine passed in 2009, television was a source of entertainment. He really enjoyed all the music talent shows and told many people they ought to try out for The Voice or America's Got Talent, and if Dr. Phil or Oprah said something-it must be the truth! On March 7, 2017 Herb passed quietly at his home with his family by his side. He is survived by his children: Bruce, Miles, Kathleen, Dale, Janet, Cinthia and Jerome; grandchildren: Dawn, Scott, Kim, Larry, Chris, Zach, Aaron, Stacey, Kelly, Jael, Jessica, Roman, Cameron, Jacob, and Nick; great grandchildren: Bryan, Harley, Jade, Kristen, Jamie, Zachary, Riley, Maddox, Carter and one on the way; and is also survived by nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert; sister, Edna Vaughn; wife, Katherine; son-in-law, Dan Lunderville; daughter-in-law, Martha Sorensen and grandson-in-law, Mike Braun. The world will not be the same without him. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 4:00 pm at East Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Amery. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. A private family interment will take place at a later date.
