Madeline E. Mickelson was born in Mansfield, Minnesota on March 18, 1925. She was the youngest of seven children and only daughter of Charles and Alma (Grams) Vaughan. She grew up in rural Minnesota and graduated from Naeve Hospital nursing program in Albert Lea, Minnesota. While in nurses training she met a young man, Ralph Mickelson, and soon the two were married and together they had two daughters. They lived in Albert Lea and Madeline continued working at Naeve Hospital there. They moved to Mora, Minnesota where they lived until 1956 when they moved to Amery. Madeline was a great cook and enjoyed preparing meals for family and friends. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Amery and was active in many areas of the church. She worked at the Amery Hospital for many years and then worked for Polk County in their home health care program. The final years of her nursing career took her to Golden Age Manor where she worked until retiring. Madeline was a very enthusiastic bridge player all her life. In retirement she served as a volunteer at the hospital and at the local food shelf. Madeline suffered a heart attack and was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul where she died on Wednesday evening, July 15, 2015 at the age of 90.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ralph, one grandson and her six brothers: Welver, Virgil, Burwell, Therron, Aaron and Everett. Surviving family members include her daughters: Gail Mickelson and Paula Hahn; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren as well as nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 20, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Amery. There will be visitation at the funeral home on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. and for the hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Amery Cemetery.
