Orvis Henry Berg was born on July 26, 1925 in Gary, Minnesota. He was the son of Henry O. Berg and Bernice E. (Garden) Berg. He spent his childhood in Gary and attended school there. He was a trombone player in the high school band, and later in the Army Band. After graduating he served in the United States Army. When he returned home he attended the University of Minnesota to earn a degree in Electrical Engineering. On September 15, 1951 he was united in marriage at Mt Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis to Palma Pearl Nygaard and together they raised four children. His career took him several places starting with Engineering Research, Univac and eventually to Control Data where he worked until retirement. One thing that ran strong was his love of the water. He spent most of his life living on a lake, the last being Lake Wapogassett near Amery. In retirement they spent their summer months in rural Osceola and Amery and their winter months near Winter Haven, Florida, on Lake Marianna. Orv enjoyed outdoor activities: golfing, gardening, fishing, swimming and boating to mention a few. He also liked spending time going to auctions and often called some of his family to attend with him. Family was always important to him, especially his grandchildren. Orvis died at his home in rural Amery on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at the age of 87 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Donald and Roger Berg; sisters: Harriet Mitchell, Marjorie Shanafelt and Barbara Nimon. His survivors include his wife Palma; sons: Howard (Diane) Berg, Randall Berg and Rodney Berg; daughter Pam (Greg) Priestley; brother Gerald Berg; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren as well as other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at West Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Osceola with Pastor Rexford Brandt officiating. Burial will be at the West Immanuel Cemetery. There will be a visitation at the Williamson-White Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. and for the hour prior to the service at the church.
