Wilfred George Kuhl was born on the family farm on Feb. 4 1922, the youngest of 8 children born to Leo and Louise Kuhl. He was raised on the farm and attended Pine Hill School until the 8th grade, he later built his retirement home at this site. Wilfred attended Amery High School graduating in 1939. He took over operating the farm when his father passed in 1940. He met and married Ermagene Carlson in 1942, and to this union 4 children were born.
While farming he was on various co-op boards in Amery, and Clear Lake. He was recognized as State Outstanding Farmer in 1969, which lead to his appointment to the Bremer Bank board of directors for many years, and his position on the FSA county board for 45 years. Wilfred was elected chairman of Lincoln township and served for 32 years. He was active in his church and community serving in many different capacities over the years. Wilfred and Ermagene enjoyed playing cards in the neighborhood, dancing on Saturday nights, traveling, spending time with family and friends. The thing he loved the most was farming, first with horses and then with small tractors, then with the big tractors. He was happy to see his sons take over and helped his Grandson Tyler continue farming the home place. Wilfred died at the Amery Hospital on Thursday, April 16, 2015 at the age of 93 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ermagene, his parents Leo and Louise Kuhl, brothers Oscar, Leo, and Homer, Sisters Matilda, Louise, Mae and Sadie. Surviving family members are his children Joanne (Marv) Gorres, Larry (Patty) Kuhl, John (Peg) Kuhl, and Pam (Dave) Humpal. He leaves 12 Grandchildren: Julie (Matt Butzer) Measner, Jackie Johnson (Jason Humpal), Jennie (Hans) Skulstad, Brian (Kelly) Kuhl, Jeri Ann (Kelly) Cook, Lisa (Ricky) Danielson, Matt (Ariel) Humpal, Ryan (Rachel) Humpal, Katie (Nick) Lauterbach, Tyler (Alli) Kuhl, Laura (Brian) Peetz, and Kara (Kody) Koch; 21 Great Grandchildren: Corey Measner, Cassidy Measner, Blake Johnson, Chase Measner, Grant Cook, Delaney Johnson, Keagan Kuhl, Carter "Hobey" Skulstad, Gavin Humpal, Lydia Humpal, Mikayla Kuhl, Josephine Kuhl, Mason Peetz, Kinsley Danielson, Gage Cook, Bentley Humpal Reid Lauterbach, Ayla Danielson, Delilah Kuhl, Graeme Humpal, and Parker Peetz as well as other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 20, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Amery. There will be visitation at the funeral home on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. and for the hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Amery Cemetery.
